Word Count<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Believe it or not, <\/span><b>word count is more important than you\u2019d think<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Think of word count for a post the same way you\u2019d think about the length of a video on YouTube. If the video is longer than 8 minutes, you are less inclined to watch it to the end. Similarly, if the video is less than 45 seconds, it isn\u2019t long enough to be interesting. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For posts on your website, you want to hit the sweet spot with word count. Your <\/span><b>blog posts should be a minimum of 1200 words<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (roughly 10 minutes of reading), and any given <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">page on your website should be a minimum of 1000 words<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(roughly 8 minutes of reading)<\/span><b>.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A research study of over 1 million searches, conducted by Backlinko.com, concluded that <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #00ccff;\"><a style=\"color: #00ccff;\" href=\"http:\/\/backlinko.com\/search-engine-ranking\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">longer content ranks better in Google searches<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That conclusion is hardly surprising. When a viewer comes to your website, they want their search query answered. Basically, they want to be able to leave your site feeling like they learned something. It\u2019s much easier to do that with more words.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>2. Keyword Density (Not Stuffing)<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we talked about in part 1 of our online SEO guide, keywords are <\/span><b>the exact words that people type into Google for searches<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Keywords help Google determine the relevancy of your content, and how useful it will be for search queries.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Ready for a crash course in keywords? Linking<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Linking can be broken up into 3 different types, as we talked about in part 2 of our online SEO guide, so the SEO checklist is going to give you a crash course. There is <\/span><b>outbound linking, inbound linking, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>internal linking.<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Outbound links<\/span>:\u00a0<\/span><b>Links that lead away from your website<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to a respected source. Google uses outbound links to determine the relevancy of your content, and to see if you are an authority on the subject. It is important that your outbound links are <\/span><b>relevant to your content,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and add to the quality of your post.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Inbound links<\/span>:\u00a0<\/span><b>Links that lead back to your website from a third party<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Basically, they are links that link back to you. This helps with your website\u2019s credibility, because if people are talking about you Google will find your website more helpful in searches. These are commonly referred to as <\/span><b>backlinks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Internal links<\/span>:\u00a0<\/span><b>Links that lead to another page within your website<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You want internal links in your content because it helps viewers travel through your website better. Boost Site Speed<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google has openly said that they use site speed as a way to rank sites. If your site takes too long to load, not only will you lose out on Google\u2019s resources, but you\u2019ll lose traffic as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can easily test your site speed by going to <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #00ccff;\"><a style=\"color: #00ccff;\" href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/speed\/pagespeed\/insights\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Google\u2019s PageSpeed Insight Tool<\/b><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Using this will test your site\u2019s speed, but only its html. Titles and Subtitles<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to having your keyword appear in the H1 and H2 headers on your pages, you also want to <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #00ccff;\"><a style=\"color: #00ccff;\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@GoGoChimp\/how-to-write-the-perfect-blog-post-title-2-900-buzzwords-bb181d223d0e#.jhmtwoj7q\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">make sure that you are using buzz words<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Words like \u201c<\/span><b>best<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d, \u201c<\/span><b>top<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d, and \u201c<\/span><b>number 1<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d make your titles stronger because they come off as more knowledgeable to searchers. Think of the search results that you click on. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s say you\u2019re doing a search on cookie recipes and your top two results are titled \u201cHomemade Cookie Recipe\u201d or \u201cNumber 1 Homemade Cookies\u201d. Get Rid of the Junk!<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making sure your site only has the best quality content for what you\u2019re offering is key for good SEO. Google has made it clear that a huge site with too much junk content is bad for Search Engine Optimization. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google has found that a site with tons of pages just for the sake of having lots of content isn\u2019t worth their resources, and therefore won\u2019t index your site. From Google\u2019s point of view, <\/span><b>if your site is mostly low value content it will generate low value traffic<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which isn\u2019t worth Google\u2019s resources. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, the lesson here is to clean out your junk. Do some spring cleaning on your website. Keep the quality content, and dump the rest!<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Things your website can do without:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Poor quality content<\/strong>:\u00a0<\/span>Poor quality can mean a lot of things, from poorly written blogs to content that has nothing to do with your website. Similarly to outdated posts, if you have poor quality on your website then Google will find you unuseful in searches.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Archive pages<\/strong>:\u00a0<\/span>Archiving pages can lead to a searcher stumbling upon a dead page that is still associated with your website. If someone clicks on an inactive page of yours, you aren\u2019t helping them find the answer to their search. In fact, more times then not, you drive them away from your services. Cleaning out archived pages will help to keep your website up to date and useful in searches.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Low substance content<\/strong>:\u00a0<\/span>Similar to poor quality content, low substance content can be anything from to <b>vague and non-informative<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> blogs to pictures with no relevancy. You want to stay current on your website, and you want to <\/span><b>stay relevant<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Don\u2019t clutter your website with junk just to have content. Your posts need to be helpful and high substance. The more useful your pages are, the better Google will rank you.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>7. Update Existing Content<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of just getting rid of all of the outdated content on your website, <strong>go through and update your existing posts<\/strong>. Take your top ranking posts that have information on it that is no longer up to date, and fix it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, if you had a blog post on your website titled \u201cBest Ways To Sell a House in 2014\u201d, you can easily go in and update the title to read for the current year. For search engines like Google, their ranking is determined by CTR, and so is your site traffic. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #00ccff;\"><a style=\"color: #00ccff;\" href=\"http:\/\/static.googleusercontent.com\/media\/research.google.com\/en\/\/pubs\/archive\/45286.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research paper<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published by Google is states, \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click-through data has proven to be a critical resource for improving search quality ranking<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d. To make sure a post is useful for a viewer, you want to make their search answer clear and direct on your page. If they are having trouble finding the answer to their query, you run the risk of them clicking away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You want people to spend a good amount of time on your website. The more time people go to your site, and stay on your site for a significant amount of time, Google will be more likely to give you higher rankings &#8211; which is a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">very<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> good thing. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Google gives your site a high ranking, your site will appear better in searches, <\/span><b>increasing traffic to your page<\/b><b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First thing\u2019s first, to get people to stay on your page, your site needs to be easy to navigate, and look good. Minimize any wide open blank spaces, make your tabs and buttons easily accessible and usable, and make your posts easy to find and get to. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>A checklist of what to look for includes:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><b><b>Make your headlines bigger and more readable:\u00a0<\/b><\/b>If you don\u2019t provide visual differences in the titles of your posts, it will just look like text on a page. Each title should look like a landing strip that your viewers can\u2019t miss. Make sure your titles are eye catching and clickable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b><b>Use graphics instead of blocks of text:\u00a0<\/b><\/b>Long blocks of text can become droning for a reader, but you still want to get all of your information across. You should be using pictures within your posts to break up the long blocks of text, making your blogs and other content easier to get through. Jeff Bullas, featured in <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The New York Times<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Huffington Post<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, found that \u201c<\/span><b>articles with images got 94% more views<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d So use pictures!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b><b>Get rid of unnecessary blank spaces:\u00a0<\/b><\/b>These blank spaces can be anything from excess space at the tops of pages, to long gaps between content. You want your website to be visually appealing to viewers, so don\u2019t turn them away by a messy layout. Tighten up your pages and make them look professional.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b><b>Design your site to look nice, and function easily:\u00a0<\/b><\/b>This follows the same idea as getting rid of unnecessary blank spaces. You want your website to look professional and be easy to use. We\u2019ve all seen a good website and a not so good website. The thing that sets the two apart is the layout. Your website should be easy to navigate with a clean homepage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b><b>Make GOOD intros (if you lose someone on your intro, they\u2019re gone for good):\u00a0<\/b><\/b>The last one is, perhaps, one of the most important. You can make your site look as nice as possible, but if your content isn\u2019t catchy enough, people will click away. You need to make them stick to your site. Rewrite your intros to be catchy to make sure you don\u2019t lose anyone in your first paragraph. Generally, you need to have their interest <b>within the first 7 seconds<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. After that, if someone isn\u2019t interested, the likelihood of them staying on your page will start to diminish. T<\/span>here are steps to writing a catchy intro that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #00ccff;\"><a style=\"color: #00ccff;\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.hubspot.com\/marketing\/write-stronger-introductions#sm.000a841tl1942ep1up220akxyl9yb\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hubspot<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has found are the most effective. You should keep your first sentence short and open with something that pops. Anything unusual for the reader typically keeps their interest, Hubspot says \u201cif your very first sentence is odd enough to make people want to read the next one, then you\u2019ve done a good job.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>9. Fix On-Site Problems<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Technical issues that make your site hard to navigate, or not user friendly, can cause poor traffic. This will cause search engines to find your website incomplete, or just not worth the resources. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Technical issues can range from tags that don\u2019t work, to errors, to duplicates of things.
